However, over 75,000 OSHA inspections were completed in 2017 alone. The good new is: simple preparations for an OSHA Inspection can dramatically reduce the stress and pain of the situation.

In the event of an OSHA Inspection, it is vital for any organization to have a process in place. This includes everything from training receptionists and front-line workers on how to greet inspectors to designating a main point of contact. Beyond establishing a process, there are a few points to keep in mind. Here are 6 Dos and Don’ts of an OSHA Inspection:

6 Dos and Don’ts of an OSHA Inspection

Do: Be Polite and Respectful

Stay calm and represent the organization well. Building good faith with the inspector could be beneficial when it comes to negotiation of citations.

Don’t: Wait to Inform the Main Point of Contact

Identify who will assist an OSHA Inspector – this could be the Safety Director, an Attorney, a third-party Safety Consultant, the President, etc.) and make sure he/she is the one handling the situation.

Do: Ask to See the Officer’s Credentials

Before the inspection begins, ask the officer for his/her credentials. Take down important information and ask for the nature of the inspection.

Don’t: Volunteer Information

If the Inspector doesn’t ask for it, don’t say it. Answer only the question being ask at the time.

Do: Expect an Opening Conference

Any OSHA inspection should begin with an opening conference. The inspector will state reasons for their visit and ask preliminary questions. Make sure to take thorough notes during the opening conference.

Don’t: Leave the Inspector Alone

Have a representative stay with the Inspector for the duration of their time. Pay attention to the inspector. If they take a picture, take a picture as well.
