OSHA Proposes Extension to Deadline for Crane Operator Requirements
Many people have been waiting to see what OSHA will do with their final rule on Crane Operator Certification Requirements and the time has come! On August 30, 2017, OSHA issued a ‘Notice of Proposed Rulemaking‘ stating the agency has proposed an extension to move the compliance deadline from November 2017 to November 2018. The comment period is now active until September 29, 2017.
Employers are Required to Provide Crane Operator Training
Earlier this year, we published a this blog with more specific details of the final rule. Simply put, this rule requires employers to provide or pay for crane operators certifications. Any operator who does not have proper certification must be trained properly. Before last Wednesday, this requirement would have gone into effect this November. However, employers may be given an extra year to meet compliance.
Now here’s the bottom line: companies may be offered an extension this time, but we cannot expect this to happen again. With a limited number of crane operator trainers, waiting until November of 2018 to complete training puts your company at risk of receiving a citation. Get started on training and certification today to allow ample time for your crane operators to be certified before compliance goes into effect.
