Overview:
Through interactive sessions with consulting safety professionals, participants will gain an understanding in: the framework for safety management, regulatory requirements, available resources, supervisory soft skills, industry-specific risks, roles and responsibilities, and developing an action plan. For an organization to develop a world-class culture, supervisors must be trained and equipped as safety leaders. This starts with a ground-level understanding of safety and risk management processes. This course is designed as an introduction to the principles and practices of effective safety management for those new to a safety-related role or operations professional.

However, those leaders must first understand their role and develop the knowledge and skills necessary to lead cultural change. This workshop sets the foundation for all safety leaders to recognize what a great safety culture looks like and understand their part in achieving this goal.

Overview:
A High-Impact Observation is any conversation with an employee(s) initiated by a supervisor or manager in which exposure is observed, feedback is provided, and a two-way conversation is held to strengthen the use of best practices and understanding of exposures. Observations provide an opportunity to build stronger relationships between supervisors and employees, but require the supervisor to engage and inform, not simply instruct.
Course Objective:
To develop a supervisor’s ability to recognize safe behaviors and communicate insights to employees in a way that reinforces engagement and build relationships.

Area inspections may be standard procedures for supervisors, but how can inspections be leveraged to increase effectiveness? Science has taught us that by learning to analyze hazards as they interact with behaviors, safety leaders can turn routine inspections into opportunities for employee engagement. Changing the approach and process can change the output leading to leverage for future impact.

Leaders will learn how to leverage skills in Action Orientation as they apply to Physical Hazard Identification and exposure reduction.

A Job Safety Briefing is a series of interactions that focus on the specific safety requirements, instructions and exposures associated with a work task. By building on knowledge and experience gained in High-Impact Observations, safety leaders will develop skills to move from two-way coaching to leading a larger group. Utilizing a genuine approach, leaders can engage everyone in a conversation around safety as it relates to a specific task or subject.
Course Objective:
To develop the supervisors’ ability to lead effective Job Safety Briefings that engage everyone involved.

Overview:
When an incident occurs, all employees watch to see how their leader responds. How a leader interacts with the affected employees and communicates to the team creates an atmosphere that impacts culture. When bad things happen, your credibility is on the line. All supervisors may have an obligation to investigate the incident, but maximizing the investigation can be an opportunity for positive change and to prevent recurrences.
Course Objective:
Learn how to apply credibility skills to respond appropriately to incidents and conduct effective root cause analyses.

Yes, but it is not recommended. The workshop topics are designed to build upon each other. Attending out of order will not give maximum benefit.
We recommend that you spread the workshops out over time to absorb what you learn and practice it at work. Between workshops, we offer optional one-to-one coaching in your work environment to reinforce what was learned, and further mentor an attendee.
No – The workshops are designed to be live education using experiential learning with interaction between the student and facilitator. This is as opposed to standard safety training. The interactions are where the student experiences a different way to interact with others.
The OSHA 30-Hour Course contains a broad set of topics that will be wider than necessary for most workplaces. This causes a waste of precious resources in productivity and payroll. Also, OSHA mandates the use of their presentations for sections of the course. The students are coached to call OSHA when there are problems in the workplace. This circumvents managements’ ability to correct the issues and exposes the employer to regulatory inspections, citations, and penalties. The foundations courses are taught specific to an industry, so they are tightly targeted. They also include soft skills for the supervisor to understand their role in identifying exposures and mitigating the risks to both the employee and the employer. We believe this targeted approach far outweighs any value of an OSHA 30-Hour card, unless the card is required by a customer of the employer. Optimum also offers the OSHA 10 and 30-Hour courses if they are needed in a case such as this.recommend that you spread the workshops out over time to absorb what you learn and practice it at work.
Not currently. The Optimum Center for Safety Leadership® is in the process of Accreditation by IACET. We anticipate being able to issue CEU’s sometime in early 2022.
If you completed the OSHA 30-Hour course within the last three years and have been using the knowledge gained with good retention, OCSL considers that an adequate foundation to build upon. You may then proceed to the first of the workshops, Safety Leadership.

Yes. The OSHA 10-Hour course is designed for front line workers, not supervisors. It is too light in content to provide an adequate soft skills and hazard identification foundation.
